Guides

Where to park at Koman, which Shala boat to take, what you can do on the river bank, the ferry clock, the road to Valbona, and what the low water means.

Swim, eat, and the extras on the bank

Swim in the clear water, walk the footbridge, eat on the bank. Kayaks and the zipline are there too, and they are not in the boat ticket. Best months for a swim are May to October.

Where the Koman boat actually leaves

Rozafa Bar sits inside Komani Port. Park about 1 km before the last tunnel, then walk 10–12 minutes or take the parking shuttle.

Which Shala boat to book

Two shared boats leave Komani Port for the Shala River: about 09:45 for €20, and 12:00 for €25. A private boat is €200. A speedboat is €250.

The ferry timetable, separate from the swim boat

The Rozafa ferry runs Koman to Fierza at 09:00 and Fierza to Koman at 13:00, every day from April to November. A passenger ticket is €10.

Koman, Shkodra or the ride back

Three published routes: Koman to Valbona €20, Shkodra to Valbona €22, Valbona back to Shkodra €30. Each one includes the ferry.

A small bag is enough

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, water shoes and cash for lunch. The boat ticket does not include food. The river water is cold.

The boat still runs when the lake is low

Komani Lake is lowered for hydropower in spring and autumn. The boat still goes. Some days the last 300–400 metres to the usual Shala stop are on foot.

Which boat is actually yours

The shared morning boat is €20. The noon boat is €25. The day from Shkodra is €34. A private boat is €200 and a speedboat is €250. The one-hour cave trip and the car ferry are different products.

How to reach the boat from Tirana or Shkodra

Rozafa does not start in Tirana. The day from the city begins at Migjeni Theatre in Shkodra at 07:00. The road to Koman takes about two to two and a half hours. The boat alone starts at Komani Port.

When the lake and the river are at their best

May to October is the season for a swim at the Shala River. June, July and August are the full months. The Koman–Fierza ferry runs from April to November. Spring and autumn can mean a lower lake.

Taking children to the Shala River

The shared boats stop on a shallow pebble beach. Children swim where they can stand. The morning boat from Koman is €20 per person. Lunch, sunbeds and kayaks are paid at the river.
